General safety rules before overtaking buses

General safety rules before overtaking buses

Overtaking buses at bus stop

There is no hard and fast rule on this situation;
I would say a signal is not compulsory....I would hold back behind the bus, either for the bus to pull out again or to watch for a suitable gap in the approaching traffic.

If you are looking well ahead you will see the bus early enough and can ease off the gas, by the time you reach the bus it will probablyhave moved off.
Look to see how many people are getting on and off, this willgive you an idea of: how long the bus will be stopped. Is there a gap coming upin the oncoming traffic to pass.
Overtake only when it is safe and legal  You should not get too close to the vehicle you intend to overtake Use your mirrors, take a quick sideways glance ifnecessary into the blind spot area and then start to move out.
Do not assume that you can simply follow a vehicle ahead which is overtaking there may only be enough room for one vehicle. Move with caution past the bus and anticipate any pedestrians walking onto the road from the front of the bus.
Allow plenty of room. Move back to the left as soon as you can but do not cut in.
Make sure no other vehicles are beginning to overtake you.
Make sure there is a suitable gap in front of the vehicle you plan to overtake.
Have a  look to see if the bus is indicating to move off. If so you MUST give way.
